Apple’s collaboration with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is poised to usher in a new era of smartphone technology with the introduction of 2nm processors, slated for deployment in the iPhone 17 Pro by mid-2025. This advancement is expected to significantly enhance the device's performance and energy efficiency, aligning with Apple's commitment to cutting-edge technology.

According to recent reports from Digitimes, TSMC is on track with its development timeline for the "N2" 2nm processors, with plans to begin small-scale production by late 2024, leading to full-scale mass production the following year. This development places Apple at the forefront of mobile processing technology, potentially giving it a significant competitive advantage.

In addition to the 2nm project, TSMC is also advancing towards producing 1.4nm processors, internally named "A14," not to be confused with the chip used in the 2020 iPhone 12 series. This indicates TSMC’s relentless pursuit of innovation beyond the 2nm frontier, although these smaller scale processors are not expected to feature in Apple products until possibly after 2026.

While the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro in 2024 is anticipated to showcase new AI features, it will not benefit from the 2nm technology. However, Apple’s existing chipset designs are well-equipped to handle advanced AI tasks through features like the Neural Engine, which has been part of Apple’s chip architecture for several years.
